We’ve almost reached the end of our course. At this point, you have learned the basics of checker play, cube action, how to adjust to the score, and so on. You’re probably a fairly strong player!
There’s still so much to learn… but most of it is fairly challenging to parse. You need to explore which of the rules of thumb are more powerful, and what the various exceptions are to the rules. You also need to drill down on variations for different position types. For example, how does the cube action for a 20-pt holding game differ from that of an 18-pt holding game? It will take a lifetime to master, and this challenge is what makes advancing in backgammon rewarding.
But before you set off on this journey, there are a few little simple tidbits worth learning. These tricks won’t make a massive difference in your understanding of ordinary game play, but they feature many common position types and so are encountered often. They are super quick to memorize, and so all good backgammon players “know” them. Let’s learn them now so that you can know them too!
